General description: The tree has
wide, pale yellow sapwood, with much
darker heartwood varying from
deep yellow to reddish-brown in color.
The resin ducts appear as fine dark
brown lines on longitudinal
surfaces and the heartwood is
considerably heavier than the soft
wood, which is soft, uniform in
texture and non-resinous.
Working Properties: The wood
works easily and well with little
blunting effect on cutters. The knots
are
usually sound. Resin exudation is the
chief problem, as this is the most
resinous of Canadian pines. It can
be glues satisfactory, takes nails and
screws, stains and gives reasonable
results in painting and varnishing
if treated for gumminess.
Uses: The valuable sapwood is
used for pattern making and similar
purposes where stability is important,
kitchen furniture, doors, window
frames, interior trim and general
carpentry.
