General description: The
heartwood is a light reddish-brown
shade and the contrast between early
wood and latewood provides a prominent
growth ring figure, which shows as an
abrupt color contrast on plain lumber,
and rotary cut veneers.
Working Properties: The wood
works readily with hand and machine
tools, but with a blunting effect on
cutters, which must be kept sharp.
Hard, loose knots can be troublesome.
Pre-drill for nailing; screws and
glues satisfactorily. It stains
effectively and finishes well.
Uses: More veneer and plywood
are produced from the species than any
other timber. Also for heavy
construction work, laminated arches,
interior and exterior joinery, poles,
paper pulp, vats and tanks.
